By Dr. Robert Carlson and the Red Bridge Family Dental team
Invisalign comes up often in our office because patients want straighter teeth without brackets and wires. Some are adults who have wanted to fix crowding for years. Others are parents asking whether clear aligners could work for a teen.
The honest answer is that Invisalign can be a good fit for some teens and adults, but not for everyone. The difference usually comes down to the bite, the amount of movement needed, and whether the patient can wear the aligners consistently.
What we look at first
Before recommending Invisalign, we look at tooth position, bite, gum health, previous dental work, and any signs of clenching or wear. Moving teeth through unhealthy gums is not a shortcut. If gum inflammation or untreated decay is present, we usually need to handle that first.
We also talk about expectations. Clear aligners can make meaningful changes, but they still require time. Some cases are straightforward. Others need attachments, refinements, or a different orthodontic plan.
For adults, lifestyle matters
Adults often like Invisalign because the aligners can come out for meals and photos. That flexibility helps, but it also means the patient has to stay disciplined. If aligners are out too often, treatment slows down or teeth do not track well.
I usually ask patients to think through a normal weekday. Coffee, lunch, meetings, workouts, evening snacks. If we can build aligner habits around that, treatment tends to feel less disruptive.
For teens, responsibility matters
Some teens do great with Invisalign. Others are not ready for removable orthodontics. Losing aligners, forgetting them after meals, or leaving them out during school can become a real problem. Parents know their kids better than anyone, and that conversation matters.
Questions worth asking
- How much tooth movement do I need?
- Will Invisalign correct my bite or mainly improve alignment?
- How often will checkups be needed?
- What happens if an aligner is lost or not worn enough?
- What will retainers look like after treatment?
